-책은 프로그래머 조엘 스폴스키가 자신의 소프트웨어 개발에 대한 나름의 인사이트를, 마이크로소프트와 기타 회사를 재직하면서, 그리고 자신이 소프트웨어 회사를 직접 설립해 운영하면서 얻은 경험을 기반으로 풀어내고 있다. 책을 읽을 때 주의해야 하는 점은, 그리고 흥미롭게 바라보아야 하는 점은, 책이 2000년(혹은 그보다 약간 이전)에서 2004년 사이의 글을 모은 것이라는 사실이다. 그러니까 과거의 데스크탑 소프트웨어에서 웹 개발로 대세가 옮겨가는(본문에서도 이 경향을 감지한 듯한 내용을 적고 있다), 일종의 과도기적인 시점의 분위기를 책은 담아내고 있다. 그러나 글이 이야기하고 싶은 내용은, 결국 대세가 바뀌더라도 과거에 잘 작동하던 소프트웨어 개발 방법론의 본질은 변하지 않을 것이다, 라는 다짐이다. 예컨대 소프트웨어 개발 과정을 관리하는 방법은 심플해야 한다(구체적으로 7개의 열로 이루어진 엑셀 시트)라던가, 경쟁자보다 고객을 신경쓰는 것이 더 중요하다던가, 좋은 소프트웨어 개발자를 뽑기 위해서는 똑똑하면서 맡은 업무를 끝까지 밀고 나아가는 역량 두 가지만 보아도 충분하다(그래서 저자는 박사 인력이 좋은 개발자로서 적절하지 않다고 주장한다) 등이다. 아울러 유니코드와 그 배후의 이야기 등, 과거의 유산을 기록하는 역할로도 충실하다. 중요한 것은 조엘 스폴스키가 (책을 쓰던 당시의) FogBugz를 넘어서 트렐로, 스택 오버플로우, 글래치 등 훌륭한 소프트웨어를 계속해서 만들어내고 이것을 잘 운용했다는 사실이다. 그러니 그가 책에 쓴 방법론이 결국은 (최소한 그가 실제로 보여준 스케일 내에서) 잘 작동하는 보편성을 띄고 있음을 증명한 것이라 할 수 있다.+
